Varouj Tenbelian

VAROUJ TENBELIAN
Journalist, editor, political and public figure, educator Varouj Tenbelian was born in Beirut to a father from Jibeil (Byblos, Lebanon) and a mother from the Karantina Neighborhood of Beirut. His father’s roots trace back to Hadjin, while his mother descends from Lapash (both in historic Cilicia). He received his primary education at the New Hadjin District Daderian kindergarten and the Sahag-Mesrobian Elementary School. He completed his secondary education at the Kevork Chatalbashian College and the Suren Khanamirian College. He furthered his studies in a four-year course in Armenian Literature and Armenian Studies at Hamazkayin Armenological Center while simultaneously taking courses in Political Science at Haigazian University. From 1982 to 1989, V. Tenbelian held the position of Managing Editor of the Aztag Daily. From 1989 to 1999, he served as the director of the “Voice of Van” Radio Station and simultaneously worked as the nighttime Editor of Aztag Daily. In the years 2000 to 2003, he contributed to Lebanon Opportunities (as an investigative reporter) and the Daily Star, English-language Lebanese publications. In 2003, he was invited to join IFP Group (International Fairs & Promotions) in Lebanon, where he worked as an Economic Anayst and Researcher, as well as a Managing Editor of electronic newsletters. He held this position until 2017, traveling to Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan for business purposes. In 2017, Varouj Tenbelian managed the bilingual (Western Armenian and English) hayemnews.com website, which, under the sponsorship of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, grew into a promising darperag21.net e-magazine in 2021, with Varouj Tenbelian as the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. Darperag21.net aims to promote Armenian literature, journalism, culture, and critical thought. The magazine collaborates with writers, art critics, and public figures from different countries and presents its content exclusively in Western Armenian. All darperag21 articles are exclusive. Varouj Tenbelian publishes investigative articles, features, analytical pieces, literary works, and artistic and critical reviews for both darperag21 and various newspapers and magazines. Tenbelian is also engaged in teaching. From 1999 to 2022, he taught the Armenian language and literature to students at the Theological Seminary of the Holy See of Cilicia in Bekfaya, Lebanon. Varouj Tenbelian and Ani Cheorekchian have three children: Nareen, Haig, and Alik.
